What home dental care recommendations will a dentist suggest?
To achieve a beautiful and healthy smile that lasts a lifetime, it is vital that you understand your role in maintaining teeth and gums free from decay and disease. Personal home care starts by reducing your risk of problems by reducing the amount of sugary snacks you consume, eating balanced meals high in fruits and vegetables, and taking care of the teeth and gums with brushing, flossing, and rinsing. Drs. Johnathan and Gretchen Kelley of Kelley Family Dental Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, can educate you with tips and suggestions for home dental care.
- Tooth brushing. Our team recommends you brush your teeth at least twice a day, typically upon waking and before going to bed. Use an ADA-approved soft bristle toothbrush and a toothpaste that meets your needs. Many patients will benefit from an electric toothbrush, but it is not required if you are brushing properly and thoroughly each time.
- Mouth flossing. Daily flossing cleans the teeth and along the gumline with ease. It can keep colonies of plaque from forming and prevent any future damage to the teeth and gums. Perform at least once a day, and consider a Waterpik or floss holder if you have difficulty utilizing traditional floss rolls.
- Mouth rinsing. Use an over-the-counter or prescription mouthwash after brushing and flossing to finish the job and ensure fresh breath!
