Fix broken or fractured teeth with dental crowns

Dental restorations are commonly used at Kelley Family Dental Center and Drs. Jonathan and Gretchen Kelley may encourage patients to consider them when they have decayed or damaged teeth. While teeth are extremely strong and are designed to last a lifetime, many things can go wrong that can impact their function and health. With a dental crown, many patients with problems with a tooth may be able to save their tooth from permanent extraction. If you live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and would like to speak to our husband and wife team about the fabrication and placement of dental crowns, we invite you to call our office to learn more!

What are dental crowns?

Our doctors describe a dental crown as a “cap” that can be placed over a tooth that is broken or fractured. It can also be used to cover a tooth that has a large cavity. Our practice offers various materials for crowns, such as ceramic or porcelain, which are preferred by most for their aesthetic appeal.

How is a dental crown made?

Our team will first evaluate your smile to determine if a dental crown is necessary and appropriate for you. The structure of the outside tooth is filed down before the tooth is imaged with a digital scanner. These maintain the shape of the remaining tooth and are used by the ceramist to fabricate the final dental crown. After this, a temporary crown will be placed until the new one is ready, usually taking a week or two. Once the new crown is ready, patients will return to have it bonded in place by our team.
